SQLite Diff: A Software Product Marketing Case Study

David Simpson of .com Solutions Inc. is one of the most effective marketers in the RunRev community. His database conversion products built using RevTalk have met with strong reviews and glowing comments from cutomers who appreciate the ease with which his tools help them convert their databases from one format to another.

But making a great product is only part of the battle. The rest is getting the word out.

In this article David shares his insights into product marketing with specific tips any Rev developer can take advantage of, using his SQLite Diff product as a case study.

From the Editor's Desk

LiveCode 4.5 Loves Linux!

The RunRev team worked some late nights to bring us some great enhancements to the LiveCode engine for Linux - here's a couple from the Release Notes:

Linux - font support improvements
The font support in the Linux engine has been completely overhauled... the fontNames and related global properties will now reflect the full collection of fonts installed on the system via the fontconfig mechanism (this is the font selection system that powers pango).

Linux - themeing improvements
Some work has been done to improve the appearance of applications on Linux. Although still not perfect, the native theme support should now correctly handle themes that have a transparent/alpha blended background on some of their parts.

In particular, the default theme in the latest distributions such as Ubuntu 10 look much improved.

And there's more. If you've upgraded (who hasn't?) and you're including Linux in your deployments, be sure to check out the v4.5 Release Notes for all the details.

Link of the Week

With so many great things at the RevLive 2011 conference it might be hard to pick a favorite if it weren't for the good fortune of meeting HyperCard's inventor, Bill Atkinson.

He showed me his wonderful iOS app, PhotoCard, and it's truly a think of beauty.

Lovingly crafted with marvelous attention to detail, PhotoCard is a great way to send high-quality photo postcards to friends and family. It also has options for sending the cards via email as well, where you can optionally add your own voice annotations.

A lesser developer may have stopped there, but check out the full list of features - it's quite an inspiration for all of us mobile developers.

And it's a lot of fun to use, a great addition in any iOS device. Delivered on high-quality card stock with an excellent finish that feels good in the hand, PhotoCard makes your photos worth keeping.
